Throwing away the canes !!

It's hard to believe we're in the month of March and still no Spring weather!! But that way also Sue won't feel so bad and want to get outside.She has just come home from the hospital after having her second hip operation. She'll finally be able to park the canes and crutches in the closet. Bravo to her!!
So until she's up and onto both feet - drop me a line if you need any yarn or any hats to be picked up. I know that if we don't get spring we will get summer- so remember to make some light weight styles of hats. Until then everyone enjoy the sun while its out.

Welcome Ladies to a new year of knitting ,sewing, and crocheting hats for Island Time Head Huggers ! Our next stop which will be in person again will be to the Victoria and area hospitals.
Currently I have about 300 hats in my car ready to be sent off to hospitals on the mainland .
With our Island Hospitals receiving hats whenever is needed we are now going to try to supply hospitals on the mainland.
Support has been very positive and I am now trying to get our group to become a non-profit organization so that funding can be sought out to help with the costs for printing the brochures and shipping of the hats. I will keep everyone updated in that regards.
Hats for men and youth boys are still needed with colors that are appropreate[ more blues,browns,tans, black ] . Thank- you to all of you who have been keeping us busy with the steady supply of hats.

We'd like to thank everyone who has been able to help get Island Time Head Huggers off the ground. Six months have passed and over 500 hats have been made and distributed to 10 hospitals on the Island. Some hats even coming from Alberta. One box of children's hats are being sent over to the BC Children's Hospital where they are needed the most.
Sue and I both hope that all you enjoy this Holiday Season and wish the best for you and your familys. Until the New Year ..... Happy Crafting and Merry Christmas !!

Just a Big Thank You to all the Ladies who have been able to contribute to the gathering of hats these last 2 weeks. Again we are sending off hats to 3 different hospitals, this time Port Alberni, Gold River and Comox, totaling 120 hats . Keep them coming as more hospitals need them and Thanks again.

Styles and Texture

Hi Crafters ,
As we are getting more hats I noticed that there are still not many for Adult men or youth . It would be great if any of you crafters have some darker tones of yarn and are able to make some hats for men. I know that there aren't many patterns for men and if anyone has some patterns that are different from the ones listed.. it would be great to be able to share them if possible. Texture of the yarns are still important, the softer the better along with being washable. Thanks again for all the great work thats been coming in .

Hair for You

For anyone who has or knows of a person that has lost their hair due to illness, we have come across a lady who has just started up a home based business supplying wigs,hairpieces, scalp treatmnents and more. Her name is Connie Hansen and is certified in Cosmetology. She provides a service that is not always available in all cities. She goes by the motto that" if people look good it will help them feel better "and we believe thats true .

We want people to know that whenever one can help out another that kindness is passed on . In todays world many people forget about the "act of kindness" or" gift straight from the heart" and forget that not everyone is seeking something in return. For a person whose ill,those little things are the most cherished. For those of you helping out this ongoing project we " Thank You" because without you we wouldn't be able to get this off the ground floor. Rita & Sue

75 Hats are ready to be shipped to 3 different hospitals up on the Northern part of the Island.

All the hats recieve a tag that states who we are and on the back the name of the crafter who made it.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the newspapers on the Island that were able to give us full coverage on the article requesting crafters to knit, crochet or sew hats. The response has been wonderful and the enthusiasm has been overwhelming .

A child can make you smile

Today Sue and I met for lunch , and as she dropped off more hats she told me a story that not only made me smile but brought a tear to my eye. Sue always has her knitting with her and a few days ago when this story happened she was with her husband. After they had finished up his work , they stopped by the Thrifty's store. Now Sue had also at this time just finished making a small beautiful lace design cap in white - just the perfect size for a small toddler.

In the grocery store Sue came across a mother with a small child who looked to have just learnt how to walk. Sue told the mother that the little girl was very pretty and the mother told her the the litle girl was very special. Sue found out that the little girl had just recently learnt to walk even though she was now 2 years old. The girl was behind in her developement because she had a tumour removed and had gone through radiation treatments. That was why the little girl had no hair also.
Sue immediatley asked if she could give the mother and child a gift. She left her cart and went to the truck and retrieved the knitted hat and then went back to the mother and child . The little girl alowed Sue to put on the hat which looked lovely. Sue explained why she knits hats and what our group is all about. The mother showed tears of happiness. For Sue it was the moment that showed her and all of us why we make these hats ... to see the smile on the child and the tears of the mother - grateful that a stranger would care about them.

End Of Summer

Well everyone - I'm back from holidays with the children and now another week of August and we're back to school . Hurray!!
That also mean more time to tackle making hats. Our response has being wonderful and continues to grow . I wil be doing a information blitz on our group and its project aiming at the variety of churchs and local seniors groups for volunteers starting locally . Summer Trip

Well everyone - the summer is quickly passing us by and its now my turn with my family to take a trip . So I talk to all of you when I get back at the end of the month. Till then Happy Knitting and Crocheting. [ of course I still need to take along my knitting - need to catch up to Sue - she makes 4 hats to my 1 ... not fair ]

Knitting Terms

There was a time when anyone who knit would knew the abbreviated terms to knitting - Well not any longer.. since now we have new terms that help us while chatting on the internet . I came across these that I want to share with you ..Some newer knitting terms frequently used on the Internet
To frog (v.): To rip out knitting several rows at a time ("rip-it, rip-it" like a frog, get it?) Also known as frogging or taking a visit to the frog pond.
To tink (v.): To unknit a stitch at a time in order to correct a mistake ("tink" is "knit" backwards).

KIP -- Knitting In Public (encouraged)
UFO -- Unfinished Object
FO -- Finished Object
SEX -- Stash Enhancement eXpedition
Stash (n.) -- A knitter's collection of yarn, books, needles, etc.

Well - its great that the little advertising that the newspapers allowed for our group is bringing in such a great response to help.
We have also been getting yarn donations so if someone who wants to knit or crochet but doesn't have yarn - please let me know .. because yarn is coming in to be used.
Please keep it coming - both hats and materials . Its going to a great cause!!

Welcome to Island Time Head Huggers first website!
We are crafters who knit and crochet hats for pateints who have suffered the fate of having cancer or being burned . We are looking for anyone who would like to join us by either contributing already made hats or have left over yarn and would like to donate it to our cause .
We then send on our completed hats to various hospitals and oncology clinics here in BC.
